Faculty Profile
A willingness to learn from others is the hallmark of a UCDS teacher. Each teacher at UCDS works collaboratively with members of a teaching team to construct the curriculum that will be used in the classroom. As faculty work together to plan programs, teachers share teaching methods, materials, and assessment techniques. Teachers are expected to use planning sessions as an opportunity to discuss students and to ask each other questions. Further, a UCDS teacher not only wants to know what to do, but also why. The process of building, implementing, evaluating, and revising programs is at the core of UCDS and is required of every faculty member.
Philosophy
We believe that learning, rather than teaching, is at the heart of education. We focus on the special talents and potential of each child and foster these talents through an individualized program. Both our faculty and our integrated, theme-oriented, emergent curriculum are central to creating a rigorous and challenging learning environment. UCDS faculty work diligently to stretch children's current understandings while building confidence, self-discipline and the art of reflection into each of the daily activities. Children at UCDS do real work that allows them to demonstrate what they know. Skills are taught in the larger context of the work. We expect children to be invested in their work, to initiate their own projects and to evaluate their success.
