Constructing Mathematical Understanding

Instructor: Melissa Chittenden
Dates: August 13-17, 2012
Time: 9:00 am-3:30 pm
Level: Teachers of preschool through 8th grade
Fee: $365 (Save $30 when you register for both workshops.)

Participants will experience a hands-on interactive workshop that links learning style approaches with traditional teaching methodologies. Participants will learn multi-dimensional teaching and assessment strategies that support the concepts covered in any math curriculum. We will also explore the distinction between teaching mathematical thinking and teaching arithmetic, as well as the importance of addressing both topics in your classroom.

  • Learn how to introduce, refine and extend specific math concepts for your students through the use of hands-on materials.
  • Develop teaching and assessment techniques that align with various levels of student understanding and curricular standards for each math strand.
  • Enhance your ability to create learning activities that address the diverse student learning styles within a classroom.
  • Explore ways to imbed mathematical thinking and arithmetic into your other subject areas; reading, writing, science, social studies etc.
  • Apply these new concepts and techniques directly to your school's current math curriculum.
