Question of the Week:

e-mail us your thoughts

TIME: Any time after leaving Fort Mandan in the spring of1805 through the crossing of the Rocky Mountains at the end of the summer.

These were some of the hardest times that the expedition faced. Many important decisions were made and many hardships were overcome. In your journal, include information on the following:

  • The Portage of the Great Falls
  • Meeting the Soshone
  • Crossing the Rockies

June 13,1805

Today we started a trip called the portage. Captain Clark says this portage will be no easy trip over the Missouri. Hold on just a moment there is a bunch of rocks needed to be steered threw . . .all right I think I steered threw all of them we encountered right before the great big brown thing.

Snowy slopes and passes
We are now heading into the rockies wich are extreamly cold. Hunting is scarce, yesterday I went looking for food all day and came back empty handed. It's never happend before. Many of us don't have socks and our moccasons fall apart in just a few days.
