e-mail us your thoughts

Time: Any time after passing though Washburn, North Dakota in October, 1804 until the end of the Fort Mandan winter in March 1805.

Living with the Mandan was a pleasant and peaceful time for the Corps of Discovery. Days during the winter months of 1804 and 1805 were spent in a variety of ways. In your journal, write two jounal entries over the course of the winter. Include information on the following:

The return of the keelboat to St. Louis.

  • How did you prepare the boat?
  • What specimens, maps and drawings were sent?
  • What do you hope people at home learn from your journey thus far?

Sacagawea and Charboneau joining the Corps.

  • The birth of Pomp.
  • Sacagawea's influence on the group.

The hardships of winter at the Fort.

  • How do you spend your days?
  • What are the hardest parts for you personally?
  • What are your hopes as you look to the spring? What have you learned from the Mandans?
