Week 3 (3/15/99): Along the Missouri

Question of the Week:

e-mail us your thoughts

TIME: Any time between the Corps of Discovery's winter camp experience at Camp Wood in 1803 to their Council Bluff experience in Omaha, Nebraska in August, 1804. Write an entry in your journal. Choose one of the following to talk about:

Camp Wood:

  • Describe your activities. What preparations have been made?
  • What have you done to build teamwork among the Corps of Discovery?
  • What are some of your hopes or fears as you look toward the spring?

Native American Interactions

  • What is a tribe you encountered? How did you earn their respect?
  • Describe the Peace Medal. Draw it. What does it mean to you?
  • Tell about the Peace Council. What were you thinking? What were the parts?

Life on the Missouri

  • Describe a day on the Missouri River from the point of view of someone on the boat.
  • How do you use your skills or talents?
  • What did you see?
  • How does your group work together to face the river?

(Excerpts from our journals)

Dec 18 1803

Were at Camp Wood today. I slept in too late. I forgot to ask Gass to wake me up. He always gets up really early so I ask him to wake me up. Today we are going to make new candles, repair canoes, eat, trade and observe the area. My main job is to get the food to eat. Well, need to get to work now!

Sept 19 1803

This very day I got a letter from Lewis asking me to go on a long and dangerous journey to map out the land and discover an over land route to the Pacific Ocean for Thomas Jefferson. I would love to go for I am good with the outdoors. He also said he needs men lots of them. He needs lots of multi-tasked men to cook, build, hunt and most of all he needs me. He says we'll be equal partners for the whole time. We will bring goods to trade with the tribes for horses. We will also need food, boats and guns. All of this will cost a lot of money for such a long trip. We will depart on May 5th 1804!

December 19,1803

We are at Camp Wood. Here is a list of our daily activities:
first we have breakfeast, clean ourselves, role call, morning drills, two 15 minute breaks, lunch, afternoon drills, two more 15 minute breaks, test new matierials, free time for writing letters, playing cards and more. Pierre Cruzzatte plays his fiddle while we dance and then after a long day go to sleep. What I hope we can accomplish on the journey is becoming friends with all indians even if at first we hate them.
