Week 2 (3/8/99): Joining the Corp

Question of the Week:

e-mail us your thoughts

The time is sometime before the October 15, 1803 sign-up date for the Corps of Discovery. From your character's point of view, share the following:

  • Tell why you want to be a part of this expedition.
  • Describe your preparations. What things have you done to get ready?
  • What special things are you taking with you. What is their significance?
  • Do you have a special or helpful skill to add to the group?
  • Who are you leaving behind? What will they say, do, think, or feel?

Our thoughts about the Question of the Week
My character is George Drouillard and this is my first journal entry: "As a very good marksman I can hunt. I will bring a 22 rifle and a pocket knife that was passed on from my great great grandfather. I voluntered to go on this expedition because I am a very good marksman. I will leave behind my grandpa and grandma and Ma and Pa. I have practiced my shooting for several months for this trip. My Ma is really worried, she is terrified." - George

October 9, 1803
My Character is Sgt. Charles Floyd, the only one who died on the journey. We think he died of a burst appendix, which probably couldn't have been cured even if he hadn't gone on the Corps of Discovery.
"As I am sitting now, writing in my journal by firelight, my daughter is sleeping soundly in bed and the same with my wife. Today went as any usual day would. I went to the shop and carved with my knife that I got from my long-gone father as a wedding present until my hands were sore and well after that, and then I came home to a warm supper with my wife and daughter. My life is getting so boring I need an adventure to spice it up."
Note: All the men on the journey were actually not married. This journal entry is not completely historically correct.
