"A meeting was arranged on a bluff overlooking the river. Everyone sat under the shade of the keelboat's main sail, which was set up as an awning. Lewis delivered a speech that was to be repeated so many times that it became a routine. He addressed the Missouri tribesmen as"Children",and told them that"the great chief of the 17 great nations (states) of America"was"their only father . . . the only friend". His small audience was informed that American cities were "as numerous as the stars", and he invited chiefs to visit their "Great Father " Jefferson in Washington as guests. Lewis hung medals around the necks of the chiefs and gave presents of leggings, garters, coats, blankets, gunpowder and whiskey to everyone." |
